their spare rooms as and when they want to make some spare money, something that is facilitated by room rental website Airbnb. Unfortunately, some of the people letting rooms out are already tenants.
Sub-Letting Nightmare
This is exactly what happened to landlords in Wiltshire. They discovered rather belatedly that their tenants had sublet a rented apartment in London to a group of teenagers looking for a party venue on New Years Eve, but because the teens were able to show that they had made a valid booking through Airbnb, police were unable to evict them.
There have been tales of upmarket flats turned into temporary brothels and tenants in social housing making money on the side subletting to wealthy foreign visitors. But if people living in central London boroughs can make around £155 per night sub-letting to tourists, it’s not difficult to see why a website like Airbnb is so popular.
