According to a recent survey of 2,000 tenants, just over a quarter of UK tenants have not admitted to their landlord that they owned a pet before moving into a rental property. Many landlords don’t allow pets in their houses, so tenants with much-loved pets often lie rather than re home their furry friends.

Pets Not Welcome in Rental Properties
The survey also found that 50% of tenants said they owned a pet before they moved into a rental home, but 13% decided they had no choice but to re home their pets. 10% of tenants said they hid their pets before a landlord inspection because they were worried about the consequences if their landlord spotted their pets.
Unfortunately, a leading pet insurer has highlighted the problems caused by pets in rental accommodation. A survey of its claims discovered that nearly 20% of claims were for pet damage, with fixtures and fittings the primary targets, closely followed by rented furniture.
NLA Warns Deposit Regulation Will Deter Landlords from Accepting Pets
However, the National Landlords Association is warning that government plans to regulate security deposits could cause even more landlords to ban pets in their properties. This will make it even harder for pet owners living in the rental sector to find a home that takes pets.
Animal charities are concerned that ever greater numbers of unwanted pets will end up on their doorstep.
