Some landlords will be familiar with the scenario of a filthy property at check-out and while the majority of tenants do look after their rental home, there are some who never lift a finger to clean the whole time they are in residence.

According to a recent study carried out by an online letting agent, the problem of filthy property damage is getting worse.
A Life of Grime
500 landlords were surveyed and nearly one third complained that ovens were left dirty when a tenant departed. A further 23 per cent complained that baths and sinks were in a disgusting state, followed by 22 per cent complaining about the state of the carpets and other floor coverings. 10 per cent were unhappy with the condition of showers and 9 per cent were unimpressed with their former tenant’s kitchen hygiene.
Piles of Rubbish
60 cent of landlords also took the opportunity to complain about the piles of rubbish left behind by tenants, most of it outside in gardens, sheds, and garages. Some tenants had also redecorated without permission and a lot of tenants had kept pets, which had damaged flooring, soft furnishings, woodwork and walls. Landlords left with children’s writing on the walls or broken curtain poles were in a minority.
Corresponding figures released by the National Landlords Association reveal that 400,000 landlords have had property damaged by tenants in the last twelve months.
