A survey conducted by the National Union of Students of nearly 3,000 students has found that nearly a quarter of them are living in vermin infested accommodation, despite the fact that they could be paying up to £1,000 per month.

24 per cent of students surveyed reported seeing slugs, mice, insects or other vermin in their property. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the only issue to arise as a result of the survey results. Thirteen per cent of students said that their landlord had not installed a smoke detector and 68 per cent said there wasn’t a carbon monoxide detector in the property. In fact more than 75 per cent of all students questioned said that their accommodation was unsatisfactory with other reported problems ranging from damp, condensation, mould, draughts, and a lack of any form of heating.
Landlords Failing to Fix Problems
More than half of the students said that their landlord took ages to organise repairs and just over one third had problems even contacting their landlord, which is surprising given the many different modes of communication we have access to these days.
As a result the NUT vice president for student welfare is calling for a stricter enforcement of health and safety standards in student homes to ensure that they are fit for human habitation.
