Sierra Leone Tenant Refused Accommodation
Amara Bangura, a radio presenter from Sierra Leone, was initially offered accommodation when he arrived in the town to begin his studies at East Anglia University, but as soon as the two landlords saw his passport, they immediately withdrew their offer by way of a letter:
“Under normal circumstance[s] your profile would be a great profile to be one of our lodgers.
“However, given that the world is about to probably experience an Ebola epidemic, we have decided not to accept anyone that has been anywhere near the outbreak within the last two months, or is likely to visit those areas in the near future.”
Not surprisingly, the visiting broadcaster was very upset.
“It’s very unreasonable,” he told the BBC. “And if you think everybody coming from Sierra Leone is affected, then that’s just completely unfair.”
The UEA students’ Union agreed and described the landlords’ behaviour as “disgusting”.
The Ebola Epidemic
Ebola has been in the headlines a great deal in recent weeks. It began as a small outbreak in West Africa, but has now snowballed into a major epidemic affecting millions of people. So far the disease has largely been contained to the affected countries, but with a handful of deaths outside of these countries, fears are heightened that the virus could spread.
