Hurricane Hits Landlords and Tenants

In the UK, we don’t need to worry about hurricanes, but in other parts of the world, severe weather is commonplace. Hurricane Harvey has caused billions of dollars’ worth of damage across the southern states in the US, and with Hurricane Irma tracking its way across the Caribbean, homeowners, landlords, and tenants are about to experience a whole lot of damage.

Life is Tough for Landlords and Tenants

For those still reeling after Hurricane Harvey, life is tough right now. Many tenants are being hit with demands for rental payments on their former homes, even though they are still flooded.

One family in Pasadena, Texas, was plucked from the floodwaters with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They have lost everything and they can’t return to their home because it’s still underwater. According to a report in the Guardian, the family’s landlord is demanding rent plus late fees and the charges are accumulating as each day passes.

“We are paying rent for somewhere we can’t live in. They said ‘you aren’t the only ones in this situation’, but what are we supposed to do? We don’t have any money. We don’t have anything,” says Rocio Fuentes.

Housing Crisis in Hurricane Hit Regions

Experts are warning of a housing crisis, but under Texas law, tenants must still pay rent on dwellings unless they are unfit for human habitation. However, if this is the case, they can apply to terminate the lease.

Of course, it’s not just tenants who are suffering – landlords will also be losing money. Further help is needed says Houston Mayor, Sylvester Turner.
