Britain’s Most Reviled Professions

By 2 min read • September 21, 2016

victoryWhilst 69% of people trust teachers and 56% of people trust engineers, bankers, estate agents – politicians are way down on the list. However, although only 7% of people trust what politicians have to say, landlords do not appear on the Which? List of least trusted professions.

This may be because, according to the National Landlords Association, 21% of landlords do not even admit they are a landlord. This may be because landlord bashing has become something of a regular pastime in the British press in recent years.

NLA Survey
An NLA survey of around 800 landlords reveals that landlords in Yorkshire and Humber were the least embarrassed about their profession. Landlords in the southeast were also happy to admit they were landlords. In Scotland, letting property is just fine as only 18% of landlords had a problem admitting what they did for a living.

Why are Landlords so Reviled?
The press has done nothing to boost the public image of landlords. This is backed up by Richard Lambert from the NLA:

“The number of people looking to invest in property is rising all the time yet the stigma attached to being a landlord never seems to diminish. It’s the minority of rogues and criminal landlords that make the headlines, and this has a negative impact on everyone else. The majority of landlords are hardworking individuals who put their own money into providing homes for others, and they should not be ashamed to say so”.
