A demolition team was called in by Ealing Council after a landlady refused to comply with an enforcement notice served last summer. The demolition was carried out at the end of September. The landlady will be billed for the full cost, and if she continues to ignore the matter and not settle the bill, the council will put a charge on the remaining properties on site until she has paid up in full.

Formal Warning Issued
The council were first alerted to the presence of the illegal beds in sheds back in October, thanks to a report from a concerned local resident. They issued a formal warning to the landlady, ordering her to take remedial action, but she did nothing.
Squalid Accommodation
By the time the demolition team arrived to sort the matter, the buildings were in a terrible state, with no insulation and serious damp. Five people, including a small child, were living in the outhouses, despite the fact the landlady had insisted to the council that nobody was living there! Fortunately the residents have been able to find alternative accommodation.
“I am always astounded when I see and hear about the unacceptable conditions that landlords of unauthorised outbuildings expect tenants to live in,” said Julian Bell, leader of Ealing Council.
“These illegal structures are substandard and do not meet the planning regulations that are in place to protect our residents and communities. They will not be tolerated and the council will take robust action where owners fail to comply with enforcement notices.”
